In 1882, Father Michael J. McGivney gathered a small group of parishioners in St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut. His purpose was to establish a group of men, united in their faith, and to provide for Catholic families in times of need. This was the beginning of the Knights of Columbus.
Guided by the principles of charity, unity, and fraternity, members of the Knights of Columbus work to overcome the hardships that people face in their parishes and communities. In Winona, Knights of Columbus members have worked to support our local parishes, bolster Winona Area Catholic Schools, foster vocations, strengthen the faith of our members, empower those with developmental disabilities, and aid those in need.
If you are a practicing Catholic male over the age of 18 who is interested in helping those in need in your parish and community, strengthening your parish and familial relationships and growing in your faith, please contact Winona’s Knights of Columbus council at kevinjkoopman@gmail.com or call (507) 429-0722.
Prayer for the Canonization of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney, Founder of the Knights of Columbus
God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will.
Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request).
